Image supplied by Northern Territory Government

This was a Northern Territory-run offset program which commenced in July 2016 and was completed in June 2020. The scope of this offset program extended the collaborative Northern Territory Government/INPEX Darwin Harbour dolphin monitoring program (2011- 2015) and delivered new information on dugong distribution that contributed to management of the species in the NT.

Project outcomes included:

  • Enhanced understanding of coastal dolphin population dynamics in Darwin Harbour and surrounding waters.
  • Improved knowledge of the abundance, distribution and habitat use of dugong in NT coastal waters.
  • Sharing science and culture in Yanyuwa saltwater country with the Li-Anthawirriyarra Sea Rangers who work with marine researchers to catch and study dugongs in the Gulf of Carpentaria
